Why Our Structural Steel Framing Estimates Hold Up

Two structural steel frames with similar tonnage can have significantly different costs. A straightforward beam-and-column frame with simple shear connections requires a different fabrication and erection effort than a frame containing moment connections, transfer members, heavy sections, complex bracing, and congested connection conditions.
We therefore evaluate structural steel by more than weight. Our estimates organize tonnage, member types, piece counts, connection conditions, fabrication requirements, and erection considerations so contractors can see what is actually driving the steel budget.
We also review structural plans, framing plans, schedules, elevations, sections, connection details, and specifications together. This helps identify changes in member sizes, framing transitions, splice conditions, and other scope details that can be missed in a basic tonnage calculation.

Coordination Across the Steel Frame

Structural steel framing interfaces with many other trades. Columns connect to concrete foundations, beams support metal deck and floor systems, bracing interacts with architectural and MEP layouts, and connection conditions can affect both fabrication and erection.
We coordinate the steel takeoff with applicable Concrete Footing Estimating, Concrete Beam Estimating, and other structural scopes to maintain continuity between the steel frame and supporting construction.
Where drawings identify deck supports, embeds, anchor rods, bearing conditions, or structural interfaces, those requirements are reviewed as part of the framing estimate.

Structural Steel Tonnage and Piece Count Takeoff

Our structural steel takeoffs provide both total tonnage and member-level quantities. Tonnage is useful for material budgeting, but piece counts and member types provide additional information for fabrication, handling, shipping, and erection planning.
Members are separated according to the structural drawings so contractors can identify how much steel belongs to columns, beams, girders, bracing, and specialty framing rather than receiving one project-wide tonnage number.

Steel Connection Estimating

Connections can materially change structural steel fabrication and erection costs. Simple shear connections, moment connections, braced-frame connections, welded joints, bolted connections, and field splices can require different fabrication and installation efforts.
Where connection information is available, we identify connection types and quantities separately so the estimate reflects fabrication complexity rather than treating every ton of steel as equivalent.
