Why Earthwork & Grading Estimating Is Different

Grading quantities aren't a simple area-times-depth calculation - they're a volumetric comparison between an existing surface and a proposed one, and small errors in either surface compound across an entire site. We build digital terrain models from the topo and proposed grading plan to calculate cut and fill volumes directly, rather than estimating off spot elevations or contour interpolation, which is where a lot of grading takeoffs go wrong.
We also price the pieces that don't show up as a single line item on the grading plan: topsoil stripping and stockpiling, subgrade preparation and proof-rolling, moisture conditioning and compaction to spec, and the handling of unsuitable soils that the geotech report flags but the grading plan doesn't quantify. When cut and fill don't balance on-site, we call out the net export or import volume separately, along with the haul distance assumption behind it, so you can see exactly what's driving that number.

A rough grading concept and a topo survey are enough to get a budget-level cut/fill number. As the civil set develops - final grading plan, geotechnical report, SWPPP - we refine that number into a bid-ready estimate with compaction specs, import/export haul rates, and subgrade prep priced against the actual soil conditions on the report rather than an assumption.
