Why Steel Estimating Requires More Than a Tonnage Count

A raw tonnage number is the least useful thing a steel estimate can give you, because two frames with identical tonnage can carry very different costs depending on connection complexity. Bolted moment connections, welded connections, and simple shear connections all carry different labor and fabrication costs per ton, and a takeoff that reports tonnage without accounting for connection type is missing the variable that actually drives price. We break out connection types and piece counts alongside tonnage specifically so the estimate reflects fabrication complexity, not just weight.
We also account for erection sequencing and site access, since crane positioning, lift complexity, and site logistics affect steel erection labor as much as the steel itself. A frame erected in a tight urban infill site with limited crane access costs more to put up than the same tonnage on an open industrial site, and that difference belongs in the estimate.
